Hello Ynonne, A reduction flame is a torch flame that has a little less air (oxygen) in the tip mix. Thus reducing the amount of oxygen to produce oxides on the silver. I hope that helps. Greg Greenwood

Fine lookin stuff. What metal do you use for springy pins.I've used piano wire for springs in some mechanical lock repairs but I have doubts about using the same for jewelry that may encounter perspiration. 👍🍻
Hello William, Thank you for you kind comment. I have used piano wire in some brooches. It works great. But yes, I have to be careful where they will be worn. I also use stainless steel and nickel silver wire for the pins. I usually give the wires a few work hardening taps to make more springy. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. Awesome video Greg! Thank you so much! I sure could have used this video yesterday. I had a bail float on my piece yesterday. After much thought I think it was because I used way too much solder. I had to reheat my piece and remove the crooked bail. I was so afraid I was going to ruin the piece. Luckily I did not. THANK YOU for this video. I am going to take another try at fixing it today.

Couple of points on brass brushes... Old suede leather brushes have more bristles, work great and last longer than you might think. If you find you need a more aggressive action to the brush, just trim down the length of the brush wires by about half, using a pair of scissors - this gives a stiffer brush. While I am using the file, I find regularly giving a quick pass over the file with a natural rubber block shifts almost everything before it builds up into more of a problem. [if you don't have one, a pencil eraser will work too] These can be found in block form and are used for cleaning abrasive belts. [also great for cleaning the crud off diamond plates]. Files are under rated and often misunderstood tools ... so look after them properly and they will give great service. Get into the habit of thoroughly cleaning them before you put them away

Why would a steel file card be any more damaging than filing regular steel? The brushes even have some flexibility to them. A scriber on the other hand is very hard and surely going to damage the teeth edges if you push into them.
Hello RCTS, You are correct when you say a scriber can do damage to the teeth edges. A scribe is only used when metal cannot be taken out of the grooves by any other means. Filing regular steel wears out a file quickly. The steel file card, you are correct, is gentler to the file than regular steel. We simply like to look for ways to make the files last longer. Hello Pia, The white surface on the metal after pickling is fine silver. The pickle removes all oxides and leaves pure or fine silver. Unfortunately, you have to buff it or tumble it off. Thank you for watching. Greg Greenwood

Hello, I like to purchase my solder from the refineries. It is always mixed properly and I don't have to worry if it is correct. May I ask does forging mean fire and hammering? Or just manipulating hammering and bending. ?
Hello Tish, Great question. Forging means hammering and shaping the metal. There are 2 different forging techniques. 1. Hot forging: This is used when "blacksmithing" and forging steel. Steel must be worked or forged when it is red hot. This is when the metal is soft and can be hammered (forged) and shaped. When steel is cooled, it becomes hard again. 2. Cold forging: This is used in silversmithing. Silver can be "annealed" ( heated to a dull cherry red ) and then cooled. The silver when it is heated becomes soft, when it is cooled, it remains soft. Because the silver is soft when it is cool, we can hammer (forge) and shape the silver while it is cool. Check out my playlist and watch the Forging Silver Wires playlist. Thanks for the Video. Maybe you can Tell me why my soldering Points on my silver jewelrys are always darker thank the complete surface? I try it with soft, middle and Hard soldering, and also with hard solder which i Alloy with 20% more fine silver to keep it more white, i always clean the solder and the surface from the jewelry but the soldering Points are everytime visible even after Polishing.
Hello Jay, Silver solder, no matter what grade you are using, is an alloy that will have more copper in it than the sterling silver used in your projects. If you use too much solder and it "spills" out on your project and is not removed, the solder will always show up a little darker than the sterling silver. The best way to avoid this is to not use too much solder. flushcut pliers are best to make yourself, by grinding the back or regular cutters, flush! also you can make flush cut gouging cutters, by grinding the pliers flush and convex. this way you can get truly flush cuts.

Excuse me teacher, I need to bring my hammers to a mirror polish again And I'm also in the process of making my own bench anvil I'm a welder by trade and large thick squares of steel are easily available but they have the mill scale on it. What is your preferred method? I'm currently rubbing it on a piece of 40 grit sandpaper and it's taking forever although it is making it true flat
Hello John, Unfortunately there is no real fast ways. For the bench block, I work down to a fine grit emery. I do use a orbital sander, this makes it go faster. Then I polish with stainless steel polishing compound. You can use the polishing compound on the hammers on a fast polishing muslin wheel. Throw a little oil or petroleum jelly on the hammers when they are sitting around. Helps with rust. Good Luck. Greg Greenwood
